PC Networking - Windows NT 4.0
EcoPRO Imaging has qualified three types of print server devices for its printers:
Other print server devices may also be suitable. Contact the manufacturer for assistance. Setting up a Windows NT printer involves several steps:
Installing TCP/IP Services Click on the Start button, Settings, and Control Panel Double-click the Network Neighborhood icon Click on the Services tab
Click on the Add button
Highlight Microsoft TCP/IP Printing Click OK Click on the Add button
Highlight Simple TCP/IP Services Click OK Click on the Protocols tab
Click on the Add button
Highlight TCP/IP Protocol Click OK Click Close Do not restart at this time. Double-click on Services icon
Highlight Simple TCP/IP Services and TCP/IP Print Server Click on Start Click on Startup... Select Automatic Click on Close Restart when prompted
Configuring the Windows NT IP Address Right-click on the Network Neighborhood desktop icon Click on Protocols
Double-click on TCP/IP
If a DHCP server is not providing addresses, and an IP address is not already configured, then enter the IP Address If you are not sure if a DHCP server is providing addresses, consult with your network administrator. Determine if a subnet mask and default gateway are required. If you don't know if they are required, check with your network administrator--generally, they are not needed on a small network. Enter the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway, if required Click OK twice Restart when prompted. Click here for 981 configuration or FastPort configuration
Configuring the Model 971 Print Server LED Diagnostics
Setting Factory Defaults If there is any doubt about the NVRAM values, set the factory defaults by the following steps:
The IP address has been changed to the factory default of 0.0.0.0 (you cannot ping 0.0.0.0). NetWare, AppleTalk, and LPD are enabled. Configuring the IP Address Open a DOS session NOTE*** In the following dialogue, all commands should be terminated by Enter Type ping known_host to establish an ARP table (A "known_host" is a TCP/IP-based node whose address you know) Type arp -a to verify that an ARP table entry has been made
Type arp -s IP_address Ethernet_address where IP address can be any unused IP on the subnet or the proposed IP of the Model 971 and Ethernet address found on the Model 971 Type arp -a to verify the static IP address
Type telnet static_IP_address 2002 where 2002 is the telnet port for Milan and Digi print servers
Type y to enter the monitor mode
Type d to display configuration
Verify that LPD is enabled. If it isn't, type n then type l and follow the instructions in the menu Type x to exit network configuration Type i to configure the IP address
Type d to verify the new IP address Type r to reset the 971 The telnet session is disconnected. If the 971 appears to hang, recycle the printer power. Verify the configuration by pinging the new IP address. Refer to EcoPRO Imaging Model 971 Ethernet Hardware Guide P/N 501987 for additional information. Click here for printer port configuration
Configuring the Digi Model 3410X FastPort Print Server Connecting the FastPort Set front panel switches:
Connect FastPort to parallel connector on printer/plotter. Connect AC adapter or power lead to FastPort. Setting Factory Defaults If there is any doubt about the NVRAM values, set the factory defaults by the following steps:
The IP address has been changed to the factory default of 0.0.0.0 (you cannot ping 0.0.0.0). The following protocols are enabled: TCP Sockets (fpfilter), LPD, Netware, Microsoft Windows print services, HP DLC, AppleTalk, Parallel port mode: Standard. Using the Self-test The FastPort performs a self-test when it powers up in the Normal mode, with D1 and D2 in the Up position. If it passes the self-test, the System LED blinks regularly. If the FastPort is properly connected to an active network, the Network LED will blink erratically. When the unit fails the self-test, it stops, displays a code to indicate the failure, then recycles the self-test every twenty seconds. The LED codes below indicate the failing component.
Printing a Test Page Set the front panel switches D1 Down and D2 Up, then power cycle the unit. The FastPort will generate a PostScript page, which can be printed on an ASCII printer as well. Some printers and plotters will not process the FastPort PostScript test page. They will, however, indicate that data are being received. See manual to determine how incoming data are indicated. Configuring the IP Address Open a DOS session NOTE*** In the following dialogue, all commands should be terminated by Enter Type ping known_host to establish an ARP table (A "known_host" is a TCP/IP-based node whose address you know) Type arp -a to verify that an ARP table entry has been made
Type arp -s IP_address Ethernet_address where IP address can be any unused IP on the subnet or the proposed IP of the FastPort and Ethernet address found on the FastPort Type arp -a to verify the static IP address
Type telnet static_IP_address 2002 where 2002 is the telnet port for Milan and Digi print servers
Type ! Type y to enter the monitor mode
Type d to display configuration
Verify that LPD is enabled. Press [Enter] If it isn't, type n then type l and follow the instructions in the menu Type i to configure the IP address
Type r to reset the FastPort The telnet session is disconnected. Recycle power on the FastPort. Verify the configuration by pinging the new IP address. Refer to Model 3410X FastPort User Manual P/N 75410 Rev 1.0 for additional information. Click on the Start button, Settings, and Printers.
Right-click on the printer to be configured Click on Properties
Click on Ports tab
Click on Add Port
Click here to configure the FastPort for Local Port (NetBEUI) Configuring TCP/IP Double-click LPR Port
Enter the IP address of the print server in the box labeled "Name or address of the server providing lpd:" Enter 'raw' (lowercase only) in the box labeled "Name of the printer or print queue on that server:" Use 'raw_p' (lowercase only) for the Model 981 parallel port or 'raw_s' (lowercase only) for the Model 981 serial port.
